A select few met to continue research, ask each other questions and drink coffee and tea, despite the roadworks.

Our visit to RAF Snaith Museum, at Pollington, was a great success, with almost twenty visitors listening carefully to a talk by Tony about the history of the airfield. Zoe made us feel very welcome as we enjoyed tea, coffee and cake from the NAAFI. There were several rooms to explore, all filled with interesting artefacts donated from various sources. There was also a display dedicated to the Land Army, who moved in after the airfield closed. It is well worth a visit!

A busy morning, asking questions and carrying out our own research.

Our AGM took place with a good attendance and several people paying their annual subscription, (by the end of October please). John Riley stepped down from the position of Chair and Jenny stepped forward to fill the role. We wish her all the best for a successful term of office!

Research, training and copying session

OJohn Barber entertained us with a talk about Yorkshire's forgotten admiral, one Henry Jackson, who deserves a much more prominent place in the history books. Thank you John.

A research and training session was held for members to continue research or preserve slides by copying slides/negatives onto an SD card.

Jean Renwick spoke to us via zoom about the next instalment of her Mourning Brooch story. The session was plagued by technical problems and many thanks for those who helped to get us connected again. It has recorded, but only what we saw, not the other slides Jean was talking about. Thanks to Jean for her patience.

After the August break, a research and training meeting combined with a committee meeting was held, during which many items were discussed to help our meetings run smoothly.

Work will be starting shortly on the restoration of both chapels in Selby Cemetery. The South Chapel will be restored and will remain as a storage / workshop / office facility for our team based at the Cemetery. The North Chapel will revert to being used as a chapel as well as be converted into an education centre / community space / visitor hub. We are holding an open day on Monday 12 August in the North Chapel where we will display the plans, answer questions, and seek the views of members of the community on how they could see the space being used. The drop in event will run from 10.30 am to 2.30pm and myself and councillors will be in attendance. I do hope that you and members of your group will be able to drop in during the day.

A very interesting talk by John Lee about the Knights templar in Yorkshire, telling us about their history and their presence in our local villages.

A few questions were asked, small nuggets of information were unearthed, which may lead to more research. Coffee was also consumed!
