One of our own members treated us to a tale of gambling, prostitution and poisoning revolving around York's Knavesmire.
One of our own members treated us to a tale of gambling, prostitution and poisoning revolving around York's Knavesmire.
One of our own members spoke about 'High stakes on the Knavesmire', telling us tales of gambling, drinking and poisoning. This was a very good talk and about 25 people attended.
About a dozen members met to continue research, exchange ideas and talk about many topics, not just family history!
- our annual post-Christmas meal was well attended by about 27 people, the food was very good and served quickly. There was entertainment in the for of a quiz, not one but three! One group achieved full marks, but I couldn't possibly reveal their identity! Thanks, Jenny for organising the event. It was well worth it!
Our first meeting was well-attended with those eager to continue their research or ask questions. We also held a committee meeting, to ensure the smooth operation of our meetings.
- a social gathering with mince pies, etc. A number of quiz questions were fired at our members and they all did very well! Sheila was thanked for her many years service as Secretary and presented with a lovely bouquet of flowers. Sheila has been Secretary for more years than most of us can remember, giving so much of her time to the group, attending events in Selby Abbey, Fun Days, etc. as well as organising speakers for our meetings. A hard act to follow! Thank you.

Our normal format was abandoned for one week, as members searched online to find answers to ten questions. It went down very well, with everyone kept busy, working individually or as a group. An example of a question is as follows - Search for Henry Christmas, born 1868 in Rotherham, Yorkshire. On the 1911 census, how old is his wife, Mary Ann Christmas?
We also had a message from Ted, our American life member, wishing us a happy Christmas. Happy birthday to you Ted, as it is coming up soon.
Three of our members gave very interesting examples of how the DNA results can be used to build a family tree and overcome brick walls.
Research morning, possibly with conversations about the talk on DNA from Karen Evans. The recording of the talk is still available to watch.
A successful zoom meeting with Karen Evans, speaking about DNA for beginners. Karen imparted loads of information and hints, answering many questions after the session. Thank you!
A modest number gathered to continue research, observing the two minute silence at 11o'clock, remembering those who who gave their lives for our freedom.
A good number met to discuss their own memories of recipes and food from 'a time ago' and horrify us with talk of pig's head and tripe! There were also some old recipe books from Selby, some well-thumbed and a jar of piccalilli from Pat.
