Jean Renwick spoke to us via zoom about the next instalment of her Mourning Brooch story. The session was plagued by technical problems and many thanks for those who helped to get us connected again. It has recorded, but only what we saw, not the other slides Jean was talking about. Thanks to Jean for her patience.

After the August break, a research and training meeting combined with a committee meeting was held, during which many items were discussed to help our meetings run smoothly.

Work will be starting shortly on the restoration of both chapels in Selby Cemetery. The South Chapel will be restored and will remain as a storage / workshop / office facility for our team based at the Cemetery. The North Chapel will revert to being used as a chapel as well as be converted into an education centre / community space / visitor hub. We are holding an open day on Monday 12 August in the North Chapel where we will display the plans, answer questions, and seek the views of members of the community on how they could see the space being used. The drop in event will run from 10.30 am to 2.30pm and myself and councillors will be in attendance. I do hope that you and members of your group will be able to drop in during the day.

A very interesting talk by John Lee about the Knights templar in Yorkshire, telling us about their history and their presence in our local villages.

A few questions were asked, small nuggets of information were unearthed, which may lead to more research. Coffee was also consumed!

Two speakers from our own ranks told us about nursing in the Selby District and a relation who rose to high ranks in the big department store business, both very interesting talks. Thanks.

A busy research session, with questions and discussions abounding!

This morning a visiting speaker, Elizabeth Hallett BEM spoke to us in a very entertaining way about the life of a district nurse in East Yorkshire during the last decades of the twentieth and the early part of the twenty-first centuries. It was fascinating to hear some of the stories and how much was expected of a small band of nurses. Some very funny stories too!! Thank you.

A busy morning of research, training and copying, all three happening along with coffee!!

24Jun

The Fun Day was a great success, plenty of people came by to see who we are and what we do, lured by the jigsaws and books, CDs and DVDs, etc. We were also judged to be the best decorated stall!!! This was in large part due to Sheila, (thank you) who had gathered news about Selby in 1974 which was displayed at the front of our booth. KCOM and the Town Council gave the group a prize! Thanks also to the members who came along to sit behind the table and have conversations with the visitors, much appreciated.

This morning's meeting was a very interesting talk by Brian Luckins, about his uncle and his life in uniforms of one sort or another. Very interesting, thanks Brian!

A small number gathered to exchange news, research tips and and ask questions.
